Nest #42 hatched and was inventoried with 92 turtles, 1 dead and 10 unhatched eggs. Nest #43 hatched and was inventoried with 122 turtles and 17 unhatched. Nests 44, 46 and 48 were all washed over by the tide. As these should contain unhatched eggs, they should be able to withstand the wash over and no action will be taken until it’s time to collar them. Per the handbook, these nests could stay in the ground as long as 90 days.

We have had problems with flash cameras this year. Please understand that after a flash goes off the turtles can have temporary blindness and disorientation before making their 48 hour swim in the ocean. Even though you think you have your flash turned off, there still may be a burst of light before the picture is taken. It is best not to take a picture.
And remember using a flash is harassment of the turtles which carries a $100,000 fine and/or one year in prison.

They could be fox or dog.
As some of you know, Seaturtle.org needs a new server and has asked for donations. We use this all the time for online reporting and keeping up with activity on other beaches. CB Turtle Program has donated $50 to this fund drive. If you don’t already have it on your favorites, it has a wealth of information.

Nest #6 hatched around 9 last night with 110 hatchlings. It was a picture perfect boil and every turtle went straight to the ocean without even turning around, which goes to show that the turtles know what they are doing and didn’t even need the real moon or our lanterns. We inventoried #13 and found 116 shells, 1 dead and 10 bad eggs.
We can only think this nest hatched on Sunday early evening and the two turtles John found were the stragglers, not the first out. As there was no runway yet, the tracks must have been lost in the beach traffic prints. This would make the nest hatching at 50 days. Nest #16 has a crack in it and green has been delivered. Also green is at nest 15. Foxes dug up the inventoried nests 13 and 8.

What a strange season we’re having! At least two turtles came out of nest #13. It looks like someone made a runway from sand so hopefully they made it to the water. The green is out there now and the nest should be collared. Again it looks like two turtles came out of nest #5 but they came out through crab holes at the side, not the center of the nest. Tom Adam’s vacancy sign must be working as we had another nest this morning. Nest #4 with a 36″ crawl at marker 56.5, we moved 151 eggs to marker 56.3. This was Jay Ervin’s first time to find the eggs and he did a great job.

No nest this morning but we did have a dead turtle last evening. It was a female 41″ long and freshly dead, probably killed by a shark or similar.

Nothing to report today. The Leatherback did not lay on Oak Island or anywhere else that we know of. Someone reported seeing her last night around 7:00 pm at 40th St. hopefully heading back to Caswell Beach.

Nothing to report this morning.
Yesterday we almost had a Leatherback nest. Around 9:00 am we were called that a turtle was in trouble at the 400 block. She was not injured and seemed to be trying to find a place to come in to lay. We followed her all day as she went west to Oak Island. We thought she was coming ashore dozens of times but she lifted up her head at the last minute and changed her mind. We left the beach at 29th St. at 8:00 pm. It was a very long day.
Joy and Oak Island volunteers followed her until they lost sight of her around 11:00 pm at West 3rd St. We’ll let you know if they found a nest when we hear something. Also Dave Weigel took some close up photos which we’ll forward.
Wendy, our State Coordinator, came down from Morehead City and stayed until 8:00 also. She estimated the turtle weighed around 600 lbs. She was a beautiful creature.

Jay’s first morning on patrol and we had a dead turtle, what a way to start training. It was around Ocean Greens Lane area, 31 inches long and weighed approx. 100 lbs. It was in pretty bad shape but we couldn’t determine what had caused death. Now we want live ones.
