September 18, 2015

Last night we got a pleasant surprise when #47 was excavated.  There were 116 shells and 10 unhatched eggs.  Obviously the nest hatched during those storms and the tracks were washed out.

#24 had 116 unhatched eggs.

#27 had 76 unhatched eggs and 6 shells.  These six didn’t necessarily emerge as there had been a lot of crab activity on this nest.  The unhatched eggs were obviously very close to hatching but the nest was washed over 10 times at the wrong stage of development.

September 16, 2015

Two inventories last night:

#62 had 75 shells, 46 unhatched and 2 live hatchlings

#63 had 88 shells and 6 unhatched eggs.

The only viable nest left is #64 which is at 49 days now.

September 15, 2015

Nest #62 had several turtle tracks in the runway this morning.

2 inventories tonight, #63 @ 6:30 and #62 @ 7:00

September 14, 2015

Nest 59 was inventoried last night: 55 shells, no live, no dead, NO UNHATCHED, 3 spacers. Small but perfect!!! 100% hatch rate, great ending for Team #3!!!

September 13, 2015

Two nests hatched around 7:30 last night.

#62 had 59 turtles emerge at 55 days

#63 had 86 turtles emerge at 54 days.

#61 was inventoried with 96 shells, 4 unhatched and 1 live hatchling

The only nest left to hatch is #64 which is at 46 days right now.

September 12, 2015

3 inventories last evening.

Nest #55 had 86 shells and 4 unhatched. Nest #58 had 122 shells and 10 unhatched. Nest #22 was confirmed a dead nest due to tidal inundation and count was not possible.

September 11, 2015

Nest #59 boiled about 7:45 yesterday with 53 hatchlings making it safely to the ocean.  Inventory Sunday @ 6:30.

Nest #60 was inventoried last evening resulting in 96 shells, 29 unhatched eggs and 1 very vigorous hatchling.

The water has washed the green and wind has filled our runways and with sand.  Every nest needs attention.

September 10, 2015

Nest #61 hatched last night with 85 turtles.

Nest #58 hatched on Tuesday night with approx 40 turtles seen by visitors

Nest #57 was inventoried with 82 shells, 11 unhatched or pipped and 2 live hatchlings.

Nest #60 will be inventoried tonight at 7:00pm

There were large crab holes in #60 and #61.

September 9, 2015

Nest #55 hatched at 11:15 last night with several visitors watching over 100 hatchlings go into the water.  Inventory will be Friday at 6:30 pm.

Nest #56 was inventoried with 110 shells and 7 unhatched eggs.

Nest #52 was inventoried with a disappointing 94 unhatched eggs and 2 shells.  Not sure if these were from hatchlings or crab activity.

September 8, 2015

Nest #60 hatched last evening just before 8:00. It had been checked several times with no activity but a tourist saw them coming out and alerted team #1 just down the beach. We didn’t get there soon enough to count but got to make sure they all made it to the water….and they thought they could sneak out there without us….

Nest #57 had another turtle in the runway this morning that we watched safely to the water.

Nest #56 will be inventoried @ 6:30 and Nest #52 @ 6:45.   Both of these nest had crab invasion and with the amount of rain can’t be certain there was a boil but we believe they have both hatched, 3 days ago for #56 and 5 days for #52.

September 7, 2015

Nest #57 hatched during the night. There were still hatchlings in the runway. 4 were dead due to crabs and 1 was released into the water

Nest #54 was inventoried last evening resulting in 116 egg shell, 2 unhatched and 5 live hatchlings.

September 6, 2015

Nest #53 was inventoried last night with 114 shells, 6 unhatched, 1 dead and 27 live hatchlings.

Nest #56 appeared to have hatched during the night.  The tracks were very hard to see after the rain but there were turtle tracks mixed in with the crab tracks.  There was a large pile of sand on top of the nest which suggested crab activity.  No hatchlings near the surface.  It will be inventoried on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

We are being asked about the nests that are long past their due date.  #22, 24, 27 and 32 are considered non-viable but we have to wait 90 days before they can be excavated.  Unfortunately #47 looks like it will be joining that category soon.

September 4, 2015

Nest #53 hatched around 7:00 yesterday and Team 3 was lucky enough to be there and watch 80 hatchlings make it to the water.  Linda Lange put a nice video on Facebook.

Nest #54 hatched yesterday evening too, just after the rain.  Team 1 wasn’t as fortunate but I’m sending a picture of what they saw.

Nest #52 had an empty egg on top and a crab hole.

September 3, 2015

Nest #53 had maybe 4 hatchlings emerge last night.  Lots of crab tracks in the runway.

Nest #51 will be inventoried tonight at 6:30 pm.

September 1, 2015

Nest #51 looks like it hatched during the night even though tracks were not visible due to rain.

 Two inventories last night: nest #48 – 96 shells & 6 unhatched eggs, nest #49 – 61 shells, 3 unhatched & 1 pipped

August 31, 2015

Can you believe it’s the last day of August!

Nest #48 had lots of tracks in the runway. Nest #51 had a dimple. Of course 27 & 32 were over washed. Nests #54 & 61 have big gullies in front of them.

#48 & #49 will be inventoried tonight at 6:45 & 7:00

August 29, 2015

Nest #49 boiled last night around 8:45 with 61 turtles making into the ocean.

Nest #48 had a couple more tracks.

Nests #27 & #32 both were over washed.  Green was washed around at a few nests so remember that the moon will be bigger and the tide will be higher when you leave your nests tonight.

August 28, 2015

Nest #48 had another hatchling during the night. It actually had its first hatchling Wednesday night about 10:30 followed by another an hour later, all witnessed by a tourist who had been sitting the nest with the team.

Nest #27 was over washed again.

August 25, 2015

Nests #42 , #44 and #46 all hatched during the night.

Nest #48 had 3 hatchlings on top, apparently objects of a crab invasion.  2 were dead and the other released into the water.

Nest #32 had a large crab hole.

 Nest #52 has a crack.

We will be inventorying nest #46 tonight @7:00

August 24, 2015

Nest #41 hatched around 9:00 with 92 hatchlings and had a couple new tracks

Nest #43 hatched during the night leaving lots of tracks

Nest #50 hatched around the same time as #39 and the team arrived to see the last few enter the water.

Nest #45 which had a couple turtles come out Thursday and a couple more Saturday morning, had 72 turtles come out last night and a couple more tracks this morning.

Inventories over the weekend:

Nest #40 will be inventoried tonight at 6:30 and nest #37 at 7:00

August 21, 2015

Nest #36 hatched during the night and a man watched 1 more hatchling get into the water this morning.

Nest #45 had one turtle come out during the night after having a huge hole yesterday evening…just 47 days.

Nests #34, #37 and #38 all had at least one new turtle track this morning.

A man on the beach reported watching one to the water from nest #34 and morning patrol saw one from #37.

Nests #35 was inventoried yesterday. 2 unhatched eggs, 4 pipped dead, 2 dead and 14 live hatchlings.

August 20, 2015

Nest #37 hatched with 63 turtles

Nest #40 hatched during the night and there were more crab tracks than turtle tracks unfortunately.

#38 had several more turtles come out with 2 dead hatchlings in the runway.

#33 was inventoried with 71 shells, 39 unhatched eggs and 5 live hatchlings.

August 19, 2015

Two nests hatched last night – #34 with 72 turtles at 52 days and #38 with 82 turtles at only 48 days.

August 18, 2015

Nests #37 & #38 both have indentions.  Nests #50 had a crack outlining the hole.

Nests #35 hatched last night around 8:15 with 91 hatchlings and 2 more tracks were in the runway this morning.  Inventory will be Thursday at 7:00.

Nests #33 hatched Sunday night between 10:30 and 1:00.  Inventory will be Wednesday at 7:00.

Nests #31 was inventoried last evening and produced 115 egg shells, 0 unhatched…..100% hatch rate.  YAY!!!

August 17, 2015

Nest #33 has a small dimple.

Nest #35 had one turtle emerge at 9:00 after being watched by 50-75 onlookers for about 3 hours. Another turtle made its way to the water this morning.

Nest #38 has a large crevice.

August 15, 2015

Nest #31 hatched with 110 hatchlings. Perfect timing for a boil with Becky Felton helping to watch the nest dedicated to her husband Bert Felton. It hatched at 52 days.

Nest #35 has a crevice. It was a very exciting evening for Liz Heidl. She
is a 7 year old from Ohio who adopted nest #35 and last night was their last night here. Through Facebook I was able to tell her parents that it had some movement and she came to sit and watch her nest until bedtime. I so wish that she could have seen it boil, but we will keep her updated with pictures.

Nest #29 had one live hatchling this morning that we watched go into the water.

August 14, 2015

Nothing to report

August 13, 2015

Nest #29 hatched last night around 11:30 am at 51 days.
Inventory of #25 produced 8 shells, 92 unhatched and pipped eggs and 5 dead. A disappointing result but this nest had been washed over several times.
Inventory of #30 producing 111 shells, 20 unhatched, 5 dead and 3 live turtles.

August 12, 2015

The Gator was fixed yesterday and broke down again this morning.  Thanks to the golf course we managed to patrol and deliver supplies.

There were two inventories last night:

Nest #23   114 unhatched eggs, 29 shells

Nest #28   30 unhatched eggs,  108 shells, 3 dead hatchlings and 14 live hatchlings.

The tides are not coming up as high right now and some of the runways need to be extended.

August 11, 2015

I made a mistake in yesterday’s report. Along with all the other reported activity, Nest #30 hatched at just 48 days.

Today, the gator refused to cooperate so the Caswell Beach police officer took us out. Nests #23, #28 and #30 each had a few more hatchlings emerge.

Nest #26 was inventoried yesterday evening resulting in 95 shell, 20 unhatched eggs and 1 very vigorous hatchling.

Nests #23 and #28 will be inventoried this evening At 6:45 and 7:00.

Green was delivered to nests #31 and #32.

August 10, 2015

Nest #23 had 2 more hatchlings emerge.

Nest #25 had at least 2 hatchlings come out

Nest #28 had an egg on top this morning and several crab holes

August 9, 2015

Nest #23 hatched overnight at 51 days

Nest #28 also hatched overnight at only 48 days.

Nest #26 and #40 had very large, deep crab holes.

August 8, 2015

We had a surprise this morning. Nest #65, an undetected nest hatched at marker 66. We counted 109 shells, 2 unhatched eggs and 1 dead hatchling.

Nest #26 hatched last night around 9:30 at only 48 days. 86 hatchlings made it safely to the water with about 30 onlookers.

Nest #21 was inventoried last night resulting in 58 shells and 2 unhatched eggs. Incidentally it also had 10 spacer eggs. It was the same turtle that laid nest #9 which was a small but deep nest and when the DNA comes in for it, I bet she laid nest #49 too.

August 7, 2015

Nothing to report

August 6, 2015

No new activity.

Nest #20 was inventoried with 121 shells, 6 unhatched, 1 dead and 2 live hatchlings.

August 5, 2015

No new activity.

Nest 21 apparently hatched last night. A number was written in the sand but wasn’t legible enough to report.

The tide was really high and looked like any nest that was not in the dunes got some over wash. The weather has sure been rough on our beach and turtles.

August 4, 2015

Weather did not allow the usual morning patrol, so we have checked the next nests coming up.  This morning they were fine and no obvious activity.

Claudia went back out this afternoon at high tide and nests 22 and 24 both were covered.  Neither nest has shown signs of activity so we are still watching.

August 3, 2015

No new activity this morning.

Nest #28 has a crack and bit of a crevice but is only at 43 days. Nest #27 was over washed again.

Nest #20 hatched last night with 98 hatchlings.

Nest #18 was inventoried last night. 114 shells, 22 live hatchlings, 4 unhatched eggs, 14 pipped and 4 dead.

OKI turtle team, patrolling this morning, met us at the pier and we compared notes. They have had lots of over washes too. They said they were about a third of the way through their nests with hatching and that they are having more bad eggs left in the nest this year. They’ve had emergence at 50 days too.

August 2, 2015

Two nests were inventoried last night –

#15 had 78 shells, 41 pipped and unhatched eggs and 11 live hatchlings

#16 had 92 shells, 32 unhatched eggs, 2 dead and 7 live hatchlings.  This nest had been washed over by the tide several times so this was a good outcome.

August 1, 2015

Nest #12 was inventoried with 107 shells and 5 unhatched eggs.

July 31, 2015

Nest #18 actually boiled last night.  The turtle we saw yesterday morning was probably pulled up by a ghost crab.  There were 76 hatchlings.

Three inventories were done last night:

Nest #11 –  125 shells, 43 unhatched, 2 dead and 6 live hatchlings.

Nest #14 – 106 shells, 2 unhatched, 1 dead and 6 live hatchlings

Nest #17 – 90 shells, 5 unhatched and 6 live hatchlings

The extreme high tide last night washed over 4 nests.

July 30, 2015

Three nests hatched last night:
#16 with 74 hatchlings
#15 hatched late at night and 4 more hatchlings emerged at 6:00 am.
#18 apparently hatched overnight.

The tide did not wash over any nests last night but the following nests were excavated because of the amount of water they had over them:
#6 – 84 unhatched eggs
#7 – 124 unhatched
#8 – 134 unhatched
#19 – 132 unhatched

We believe most of these nests were already compromised from the last inundation about a month ago.

July 29, 2015

Nest #64!!!! Located at marker 66 with a 32 inch crawl

2 false crawls today, 33″ @ marker 68 and 35″ @ marker 73.9 Nests #11 & #17 each had 2 more hatchlings emerge during the night Nests #15, #16 & #18 all still have crevices…..maybe tonight.

Nest 12 hatched around 9:00 last night with 103 hatchlings making it safely to the water.

Now for the bad news. Many of you came to the villas yesterday evening and saw that we had an extremely high tide. Nests #8, #9 and #13 were all victim of a tide pool. We excavated. #9 produced 45 unhatched eggs, 2 shells and 8 live. #13 had 51 unhatched eggs, 25 pipped dead, 18 eggs shells and 18 live hatchlings. Most of the unhatched eggs from both nests were dark in color which was probably caused by our last series of high tides. Nest #8 was too deep in the water. Nests #6, #7 & #8 have all been lost to the high tides. We can expect the same or higher tides for the next 5 days.

July 28, 2015

One 43”false crawl this morning at the west end of the villas.

Nest #15, #16 and #18 all have holes.  More turtles tonight.

Green was delivered to nests #19, #20 and #21.

Lots of activity at the nests last night.

Nest #11 hatched around 9:00.  103 hatchlings made their way to the water with about 120-150 people watching.

Nest #17 had 2 hatchlings come out about 8:00 then a full boil about an hour later.  A huge crowd very quietly watch a total of 104 hatchlings march their way into the water.

Nest #14 hatched sometime during the night without us.

Inventories will be Thursday.

No new activity.

Nest #10 has 30 hatchlings emerge in groups of 8 or 9 last night.

Nest #2 was inventoried yesterday with 107 shells and 4 unhatched eggs.

Green was delivered to Nest #14 making green at all nests up to #15.  Because we have had hatchlings early in a couple of nest (#5 @50 days & #10 @52 days) we have decided to put the green out on the 50th day.

July 22, 2015

No new activity overnight but 3 inventories last evening:

July 15, 2015

Nest #56 with a 37” crawl at Marker 68

False crawl of 37” at Marker 61.5

Three very short 35” false crawls around the Villas.  She seemed to have encountered cabana poles twice.

We had an abnormally high tide last night which washed over 16 nests, 5 of which had been relocated back from the high tide line.  An overwash doesn’t affect the eggs as long as the water doesn’t sit in the nest for long.

July 14, 2015

2 more nests today!

Nest #54 near marker 58 and we measured her crawl at 43”. Nest #55 is near marker 67.9 with a 42” crawl.

June 27, 2015

We had nest #34 from a 41” crawl at Marker 64.1
Two 34” false crawls at Marker 60 and 69
Disturbing incidents today were at Nest #3 where someone had put a large piece of firewood in the center of the nest. The people renting the nearby house had been made to move their cabana as it was within a couple of feet of the nest and was shading it. Also the wire at Nest #31 had been crushed, apparently by someone falling on it.

June 26, 2015

Just one 33” false crawl at marker #62. There are already four nests at this location – maybe she thought it was too crowded.

June 25, 2015
