Sea Turtle action on Caswell Beach is keeping our teams busy this week while we work to keep the high tides at bay.
Nest #10 had a partial boil last night before dark with 67 hatchlings.
Nest #8 had 1 more hatchling emerge last night. A young person called our hotline at 1:00 am to let us know. Thank you!!
Crabs are always an issue and this year is no exception. Nest #1 had a crab hole and some ants. Nest #4 also had a crab hole. Nest #10 had a crab hole and hatched shell pulled out.
Nests #7, #46, #48, #49, #52 and #56 were all overwashed by the higher than normal high tide. It appears to have gone higher than last month’s King Tide! We are told by our state biologists that generally a small amount of overwash can be healthy for a nest and is a natural occurrence.
We had 3 False Crawls and 1 new nest. So our sea turtle mamas are still busy!
The False Crawl Mama worked very hard! She must not have liked something about her first 3 attempts. She crawled all over! The fourth attempt was the charm! All the False Crawl widths matched the Nest #57 crawl width. We are so happy she didn’t give up!
Nest #57 was laid just above the high tide line. 117 eggs were relocated to a safer area near the dune line.
