We have had 2 very successful inventories since Tropical Storm Ernesto passed by and the King Tides arrived. Both of these nests escaped overwash, but did endure heavy rains. This gives us hope for success in our remaining nests!
All of Nest #29’s hatchlings made it to the water. There were 122 hatched egg shells and only 6 unhatched eggs. No pipped, live or dead.
Nest #30’s hatchlings also made it to the water. There were 130 hatched egg shells and 11 unhatched. No pipped, live or dead.
It does appear that our Mama Sea Turtles have completed their laying season. Our last nest was laid on August 10th. While 63 nests is lower than the last 2 years, it is still a good number for Caswell Beach. Our Mama turtles lay every 2-3 years on average. So, Yipee for 63!
