New Sea Turtle Nest Runway Greening and Signage

Yahoo! We have 42! Today we are sharing our latest sea turtle nest updates, and some information about our new nest management practices.

Nest #41 was laid yesterday and Nest #42 was laid today, both in safe locations.

Next week, Caswell Beach Turtle Watch will set up the first runways for several sea turtle nests. Per the new NCWRC State Guidelines, our runways will be wider than last year to allow for a more natural emerging pattern. We are greening around the 50th day of incubation, but we know that these first several nests will take much longer than that to hatch due to cooler temperatures in May and early June. Last year’s first nest took 76 days to hatch!

We also have new, informational signs that will be placed at each nest when they are in the ‘hatching window’. These improved signs make our phone number much more obvious and easy to see at night, providing some helpful hints as well. We encourage beach goers to save this number in the cell phones should they need it: 910-368-6323

Please call us if you see any sea turtle activity on the beach (mamas or hatchlings) so we can respond and collect much needed data for preservation and conservation.

**This conservation work for protected sea turtles on Caswell Beach is authorized by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (ES Permit 24ST03).
