Meet Boston Cream Pie, Chocolate Mousse, Daylily, Flax, Kudzu, and Voodo Lily. These are the names for six cold-stunned, stranded sea turtles rescued and rehabilitated from the Cape Lookout National Seashore area this past winter.
Caswell Beach Turtle Watch answered the call from the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on Monday morning to assist with a sea turtle release for a small audience on Caswell Beach.
Boston Cream Pie was the largest of the bunch at 34.7 kg, complaining loudly with flapping flippers that it was time to head for the ocean. The Karen Beasley team, with help from a CBTW staff member, brought the turtle to the beach on a “turtle taxi” transport cart, and Boston Cream Pie was off!
The remaining smaller green turtles (ranging in size from 4.3-5.2 kg, or the size of a medium pizza) were carried along the perimeter by each accompanied by a KB & CBTW staff member to provide a closer view for the crowd and then gently released into the ocean, where all succesfully swam off to warmer waters.
We thank the Karen Beasley team for the oppurtunity to assist with reintroducing these precious creatures to the ocean, and look forward to a successful 2026 Sea Turtle Season.
