Caswell Beach Turtle Watch has been out patrolling and anxiously awaiting our first sea turtle nests. The first few weeks are always a guessing game to see what our Mama Turtles will do, where they like to crawl and when! We wanted to share the news of our first crawls and nests, and as things get busier will send out weekly updates to let you know that latest.
As we shared in our last post, Mama Pebbles is back, which is exciting news. Since then we’ve had a few false crawls on Caswell Beach and we are suspecting the Mamas are finding the newly refurbished sand to be a bit hard for digging. But this morning, we were happy to find Nest #2! We also had a false crawl, so we are suspecting Mama did not like her first choice. She may have gotten a bit tired from it all as she parked her nest right at the high tide line, so it was relocated to a safer location. Two of her eggs at the top were also broken in the process as she buried her nest.
It’s been a warm week so far, with the temps holding, so our fingers are crossed that our activity will pick up consistently going forward. Check back for updates!
