Hurricane Erin devastated many incubating sea turtle nests along the North Carolina coast, with estimated losses nearing 11% of all nests. The extreme high tides overwashed the remaining incubating nests and deposited up to a foot of sand in some cases. See the recent article on Coastal Review for its interview details with Caswell Beach Turtle Watch and other turtle groups across NC.
We’ve been anxiously awaiting the development of our remaining nests and have been pleasantly suprised by several small miracles of survival. Mother Nature and these little sea turtles never cease to amaze us.
