Do Caswell Beach Sea Turtles Know A Storm Is Coming?

Can turtles sense an incoming storm? This week on Caswell Beach has left us wondering, as many of our sea turtles nests show increased activity. Many are deciding it’s time to get out early, and are anxious to get into the ocean! It’s keeping us very busy these last few days, and we are hoping the nests that are due make it out before the storm.

This year there has been a lower nest count overall on Eastern Coast, which traditionally happens every few year as sea turtle mamas go off to replenish. For Caswell Beach, there are 44 nests this year, as compared to 63 in 2024, and 93 in 2023.

As of this week, 26 of our nests have hatched. Many have surprised us with early boils, roaring fast boils, and of course, the small miracles of mother nature when we inventory and free more babies.

Here are some highlights from this week. Enjoy!
